Phonics

Intent
  • At Wyndcliffe Primary School, we use the Read, Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach discrete phonic lessons and early reading in EYFS and Key Stage 1
  • Through this structured and pacey programme children gain the phonological knowledge (at the appropriate stage) they need in order to become confident and fluent readers and writers
  • All children at Wyndcliffe Primary School will learn to read with accuracy and fluency, regardless of their background, needs or abilities
  • Children will leave Key Stage 1 with the reading skills to enable them to access the Key stage 2 curriculum

Implementation

  • Use of the Read, Write Inc (RWI) scheme to teach phonic skills throughout the school
  • Phonics is taught daily in Nursery, Reception and Year 1. Our Year 2 children and KS2 children (who have not achieved the standard of the phonics screening check or are new to country), are taught the speed sounds appropriate to their individual phonological knowledge
The teaching order of the sounds:
Set 1 sounds m a s d t i n p g o c k u b f e l h sh ck r j v y w th z chq u x ng nk
Set 2 sounds ay  ee  igh  ow  oo  oo  ar  or  air  ir  ou  oy
Set 3 sounds ea  oi  a-e  i-e  o-e e   ue   aw  are  ur  er  ow  ai  oa  ew  ire  ear  ure  ure  tious  cious  tion
Additional set 3 sounds kn  ph  wh  e-e  au  ue

  • Children are placed in groups based on on-going assessments to ensure the teaching they receive is specific to them
  • 1 to 1 tutoring is used to target unique gaps in the lowest, slowest progress children across school
  • Coaching and practice sessions for all reading teachers is regularly delivered by the Reading Leader
  • Regular Development Days take place with the RWInc consultant
  • Parents are enabled to support their children through workshops and daily phonic videos that are sent home
  • RWI Phonic Screening Check assessments are carried out to inform planning of afternoon sessions
  • Story time is used to embed pleasure for reading and a love of books across the whole school

Impact

  • High quality phonics teaching is delivered by all reading teachers
  • Increased percentage of pupils achieving the expected standard in the Phonics Screening Check at the end of year 1 and year 2 (for children re-taking/new to school)
  • Increase in the % of children who achieve the Early Learning Goals for Comprehension, Word Reading and Writing

Increased percentage of children achieving ARE in Reading at the end of Key stage 1
